The Dorfman Group, working in collaboration with the Frisbie Group, is developing a new biosensing platform based on the combination of printed electronics technology and microfluidics. The resulting floating gate transistor (FGT) technology couples an electrolyte-gated organic transistor for low-voltage, sensitive operation to an aqueous microfluidic environment that permits facile sample handling and rapid transport. Research to date has demonstrated csensing of DNA, biotoxins, food allergens, and pesticides in complex matrices with sensitivities that rival ELISA in a much simpler and portable format. Future work is expanding the range of targets that can be sensed with the device, coupled to advances in the device design to improve gain, sensitivity and speed.
